Painted chalkboard kitchen wall

I just read the newest issue of Cottage Living. And I love, love, love this idea from their 2007 Idea Home. So much so, that I fully plan to do something similar in our next kitchen (our current kitchen wouldn't really work with this). And I really love that this "recipe" below lets you choose your own color, instead of standard black. Oh, and that rustic sliding door -taken from an old bank in New Orleans - awesome.

"Everyone loves the novelty of a chalkboard surface, but most of the time you're limited to black or green. This recipe allows you to mix your own colors. For the pantry area, we mixed the chalkboard paint in 1-gallon batches.

1. Pour 1 cup of acrylic latex paint, in the color of your choice, into a clean, 1-gallon bucket.

2. Add 2 tablespoons of dry, unsanded tile grout mix into the paint, and mix until the paint is smooth and clump-free. (Use plain grout mix without added pigments to prevent color shifts. We used a kitchen whisk to mix our paint.) Repeat the mixing process until you have enough paint to complete your entire project.

3. If necessary, prepare the wall with a light sanding or priming. Apply the chalkboard mixture to any paintable surface with a roller or brush. (We used two coats of our chalkboard paint to build up a thick surface.)

4. Allow the paint to completely dry, then sand the surface with fine sandpaper until you achieve a texture that accepts chalk. Next, "color the surface with the wide part of a piece of white chalk to get a chalkboard-like patina.

5. Wipe away excess chalk with a damp cloth."

Oh, I LOVE this. Yes, in my next house there will be a big chalk-board wall in my studio. Thanks so much for sharing.

I have been enjoying your blog for a few weeks as we bought a 120 yr. old victorian brick twin in a little town in PA. I relate to the narrow space to work with and enjoy seeing what you did and plan to do. I love your kitchen! Anyway, we painted an entire kitchen wall with blackboard paint b/c I wanted to give the smallish kitchen some personal quirkiness. We draw on it all the time, as well as write down appts., private jokes, fun pics (and we don't have kids!). But now I'm seeing the chalkboard 'wall' everywhere!! It's ok though b/c it's done with such panache and it really does add some character and fun to a kitchen....or dining room, which I've been seeing in interior mags lately. It definitely should be used in an office! I love the "black" colored paint b/c it's a nice graphic statement -- i love black and white together.

hi Shelley! Thank you for the nice comments, and thank you for reading! I wish this was my kitchen - it was actually taken from Cottage Living magazine, probably my all time favorite for inspiration. I will post photos of my kitchen soon. promise! Would love to see pics of your kitchen too. I love chalkboard anything.

I love this, too! I have been thinking about painting the inside of one of my kitchen cabinet doors with chalk-paint to use as a hidden message board.

I love this idea! I had no idea you could do it in different colors, though. You'll have to post pics of your actual kitchen when you do this. I wish I were gutsy enough, but I have this aversion to the texture and sound of chalk writing. LOL. Seriously. Love your blog!

We just did this in our bathroom and it is fantastic!! It was super easy, and now I have an indigo colored chalkboard in my bathroom. We are now planning on painting the interior doors with the chalkboar paint. This is really a great idea!

I make blackboards and chalkboards in a wide variety of frame styles and sizes. Just another option that might work and provide the same functionality.
